A canthoplasty procedure is used to lift the outer corners of the eyes or provide extra support for the eyelids after upper or lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). This specific eyelid surgical procedure is used to correct several medical and cosmetic conditions, including ectropion, drooping and sagging of the lower eyelids. It may also be used to correct deformities caused by trauma, disease, or previous eyelid surgery.
Dr. Steven Fagien and the surgeons at The Institute for Aesthetic Medicine advise patients that a canthoplasty is ideal to:
- Improve a sad or tired look
- Restore a more youthful and vibrant appearance
- Correct the unwanted effects of previous eyelid surgery or trauma
HOW IS A CANTHOPLASTY PERFORMED?
Our surgeons use a minimally invasive approach for lateral canthal procedure which tightens the lower eyelid resulting in better eye skin contour and the scars are well-concealed. This technique utilizes the same incision used for lower blepharoplasty, resulting in undetectable scars once healing is complete.
Canthoplasty is a surgical technique used to:
- Lift the outer corners of the eyes
- Correct drooping eyelids
- Provide extra eyelid support after upper or lower blepharoplasty
Canthoplasty can tighten a saggy, loose lower eyelid, and reshape and reposition the lateral canthus. This procedure uses an incision in the outer corner of the eyelid to reconstruct the weakened or stretched canthal tendon that anchors the lower eyelid, which in turn elevates the outer corners of the eyes and improves their overall shape. In some cases, Dr. Steven Fagien and the physicians of the Institute of Aesthetic Medicine may also address excess skin and fat during the procedure for optimal results.
Lateral canthoplasty can also be helpful for patients who have had prior lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty) with retracted (pulled down) lower eyelids and rounded canthus. This technique can be used to repair an overdone or surgical appearance to the eyes.
